Fat in specific areas that will not shift despite consistent diet and exercise is common, and it is not a sign of poor self-care. Every body has its own order of preference for where fat is stored, and losing weight overall does not reduce a given area proportionally.
Programmes in this group work directly on the fat cells and muscle in the area concerned, reshaping specific regions so the overall proportions sit better.
Common presentations in this group
- Lower abdominal fat that remains after body weight has come down
- Flanks and the waistline that stop clothes fitting properly
- Upper arms and thighs that lack firmness
- A post-pregnancy abdomen where the muscle has not regained tone
- An overall lack of definition even at a healthy weight
Two routes to reshaping
Reshaping is not only about removing fat: for some people the issue is muscle tone rather than fat volume. The assessment looks at both together.
Reducing the fat layer
Suited to a thicker fat layer in the target area, where the main goal is a reduction in volume.
CoolSculpting Elite uses cooling to break down fat cells, which the body then clears through its own processes — best suited to fat that can be clearly pinched. ONDA Pro Slim uses microwave energy that reaches the fat cells while also addressing skin firmness over the same area.
Building muscle tone alongside fat reduction
Suited to those whose fat layer is not especially thick but whose shape lacks definition, or who want abdominal muscle to regain tone.
Emsculpt NEO does two things in one device: it drives muscle contractions at an intensity ordinary exercise cannot reach, while applying heat to reduce the fat layer in the same area.
For a technical comparison of the individual devices — how each works, session counts and aftercare — see the Body Contouring devices page.
Frequently asked questions about body shaping
Will I lose weight?
The number on the scale usually changes little, because these programmes reduce fat volume in the treated area rather than across the whole body. What most people notice first is a smaller waist measurement and clothes fitting better. If weight loss is also a goal, diet and exercise remain the foundation — and these programmes work well alongside them for the areas that stay out of proportion.
How does this differ from liposuction?
Liposuction is surgery: fat is removed in a single procedure and recovery time is required. These programmes involve no surgery and no downtime, but change is gradual and several sessions may be needed — which makes them suited to volumes that do not warrant surgery.
Will the fat come back?
Fat cells that have been cleared do not return, but the cells that remain — in that area and elsewhere — can still enlarge. Results hold well for as long as diet, exercise and rest are maintained.
How many sessions are needed?
It depends on the technology, the area treated and the starting thickness of the fat layer. The physician gives the expected number and the spacing between sessions at the consultation.
Is it painful, and is downtime required?
No downtime — you can return to work and normal activity the same day. Sensation differs by technology: some feel cold and tight, others feel like rhythmic muscle contractions. What to expect is explained beforehand.
Who is not suitable for these programmes?
Pregnancy, implanted electronic or metal devices in the area to be treated, and certain health conditions all require physician assessment first.
Book an assessment
An assessment distinguishes whether your concern is fat volume, muscle tone, or both — which lead to different programmes. See the other groups on the Treatments page, or the full equipment list under Technology & Devices.
Dr. Supranee consults every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 13.00-18.00.
Individual results vary depending on body condition, the thickness of the fat layer, and post-treatment care. A physician assessment is recommended before deciding on any treatment.
