What is PicoWay?
PicoWay Laser (Candela, USA) is a laser platform from the United States using picosecond laser technology to address pigmentation and support skin rejuvenation.
What is a picosecond laser?
- It is a laser technology for clearing pigment, delivering light in extremely short pulses measured in picoseconds (1 ps = one trillionth of a second)
- The earlier standard was the Q-switched laser, in use for around 20 years, operating in nanoseconds (1 ns = one billionth of a second)
- One picosecond is 1,000 times shorter than one nanosecond
- Studies show picosecond pulses break pigment and tattoo ink into smaller particles than nanosecond pulses
- Smaller particles are cleared by the body more easily, so pigment and tattoo treatments generally need fewer sessions than with the older technology
Why we chose PicoWay
- Picosecond lasers are made by several manufacturers and differ in technical detail
- PicoWay delivers short pulses (350/450 ps) at 1064/532 nm wavelengths, which suit Asian skin and melasma
What can PicoWay treat?
There are two main modes of use.
1. PicoWay Pigment / Tattoo / Picotoning
- Picosecond laser light is applied to areas of pigment to break down excess pigment so the body can clear it
- Used for hyperpigmentation such as melasma, freckles, Hori's nevus, birthmarks and dark marks, as well as tattoo removal
- The doctor selects the wavelength, handpiece and mode appropriate to each case
2. PicoWay RESOLVE / Fractional PicoWay
- Delivers picosecond light as 100 microscopic points within a 6x6 mm area
- PicoWay Resolve uses a Holographic Fractional Handpiece for precise points with consistent energy across every point
- Each point creates a small space within the dermis known as a Laser-induced Cavity (LIC)
- At one month, studies show new collagen fibres forming in the dermis
- Used for skin irregularities and skin showing age and sun damage — enlarged pores, rough texture, fine lines, acne scars, scars and stretch marks
(Individual results may vary.)
The PicoWay treatment procedure
- The face is cleansed and numbing cream applied for 30-60 minutes
- During treatment you feel a light prickling on the skin and hear the sound of the laser
- Treatment starts with Picotoning across the face to address pigment, followed by Resolve, taking around 30-45 minutes depending on the program for each case
- Cold air cooling with a Zimmer unit is used throughout for comfort and to reduce stinging
- Afterwards, cold packs are applied as needed and we recommend continuing with LLLT to reduce swelling, tenderness and redness
What to expect after PicoWay
- Redness can last 2-5 days and swelling 1-2 days, depending on your skin and the details of the treatment
- If you need minimal downtime, please tell the doctor before each treatment
Aftercare
- Apply cold packs frequently on the first day
- Apply a generous, frequent layer of anti-redness cream (steroid-free)
- Moisturise more than usual
- Avoid all forms of heat and sun exposure
- If itchy bumps appear (which happens in some people) an antihistamine may be taken; if severe, please consult the doctor
- You may come in for LLLT daily during the first 2-3 days, which helps redness, swelling, itching and stinging settle faster
- Avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks
